62-year-old Meenakshi visited Chennai Orthopaedics with a lot of apprehensions. She had been experiencing knee pain and difficulty walking for a few years now. However, due to the excruciating pain, she had given up activities that she enjoyed, such as making Rangoli in front of her house or going for evening walks with her friends. When the knee pain began interfering with the playtime with her granddaughter, she finally conceded to the request of her son and decided to meet a doctor.

Dr Bharani Kumar Dayanandam, the Trauma, Joint Replacement, and Arthroscopic Surgeon at Chennai Orthopaedics, has seen a lot of cases like Meenakshi's. According to Dr Bharani Kumar, osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions that necessitates total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries. It is caused by wear and tear of the knee cartilage.

Total knee replacement (TKR) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is done to replace the damaged knee joint with an artificial joint. For expert orthopaedic surgeons like Dr Bharani Kumar, total knee replacement surgeries are routine procedures with 100% success rates. The procedure is becoming increasingly precise as a result of advancements in science and technology, leaving very few margins for error. “Cutting-edge technologies like computer-based navigation tools and robotic techniques are not only making the procedure easier and precise but also lowering the likelihood of postoperative complications,” says Dr Bharani Kumar.

Meenakshi was wary of total knee replacement because she was a very active and independent person. She was concerned that while she was recovering from the surgery, she might have to stay in bed for a long time. However, following her meeting with Dr Bharani Kumar, she felt ready to undergo the surgery. Meenakshi says, "Dr Bharani Kumar took the time to address all of my concerns and inform me of the advantages of total knee replacement. I felt reassured and decided to take the plunge."

Total knee replacement surgery is a blessing from heaven for people suffering from knee ailments. It provides relief from the pain and suffering caused by conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, stiff knee, knee deformities, etc. “Unlike many other surgical procedures, total knee replacement is safe for people of all ages,” says Dr Bharani Kumar. The advantage of total knee replacement is that rehabilitation therapy begins the very next day of the procedure.

Although full recovery may take anywhere from four to six months, patients can start walking as soon as they recover from the effects of anaesthesia. However, Dr Bharani Kumar warns against engaging in any activity that could put too much stress on the replaced knee joint. “If the primary knee replacement fails one might have to opt for revision knee replacement surgery which is more complicated and time-consuming,” he says.

“I am so glad that I decided to have a total knee replacement in both my knees. Now I can play with my granddaughter, teach her to draw rangolis, spend time with my friends in the park, etc with ease and comfort,” beams Meenakshi. Dr Bharani Kumar is pleased that he can assist Meenakshi and other many others like her in returning to their happy lives.

For more than a decade, Chennai Orthopaedics has successfully performed total knee replacement or total knee arthroplasty surgeries, giving patients a chance to live normally and without pain.
